The blu-Ray does not contain a lot of fancy behind the scenes footage but what it does bring to the viewers are stories of how the film came to be. From cast interviews to interviews with Tony Lip’s son, we see what a labor of love and truth their project was for those involved. Below is a brief breakdown of what we can expect in each of the 3 featurettes.
Dr. Donald Shirley and Tony Vada are played by two of the best actors of today, Mahersala Ali and Viggo Mortensen. Viggo embodies an Italian from the 60s paying great attention to detail from mannerisms to accent. Mahersala trained with composer Chris Bowers’s to play the piano so he would know what it should look like during the performance scenes.
Both actors have a great on screen chemistry and great working relationship which helped make the story come to life.
An Unforgettable Friendship
This film is about two people from very different worlds. It shows how the friendship blossomed and grew to last for years. The narrative is underscored by the magnificent music of Dr. Shirley. Tony Lip’s son wanted to bring to life the stories his father had shared so a lot of tape recordings and letters were referenced to be true to the story.
Going Beyond the Green Book
The title is reference to the motorist book that showed where colored people could stay in the South, safely and be welcome. The system of “separate but equal” was in full effect and published the places across the country where African Americans could stay. The book showers the entrepreneur spirit of the African American community as they banded together to create this roadmap. This book is now a relic of the Jim Crowe era.
Green Book is currently available on demand, DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD.
