Rami Malek: Becoming Freddie
Rami Malek discusses the journey he underwent to become the iconic legend that is Freddie Mercury. Beginning from sending in an iPhone video of himself as Freddie Mercury being interviewed to doing his due diligence to learn about the singers life before and after his rise to fame. Rami worked with a movement coach to be able to capture the body movements and mannerisms that were iconic to Freddie. He also worked with various vocal coaches so he could sing out while filming. Even if his voice wasn’t heard the performance needed to look real.

The hair and makeup tram helped capture the essence of Freddie Mercury with wigs, mustaches, nose prosthetics and fake teeth. Wardrobe and makeup made the transformation take full effect.

The Look and Sound of Queen
When making the film, producers needed to be truthful to the events of Freddie’s life. They didn’t look for big names, rather great actors that could transform themselves. It as important to have actors that could embody each band member, not imitating them but embodying them. Brian May and Roger Taylor were very involved in the making of the film and were alleys on hand to give insights to what Queen and Freddie Mercury were about.

The actors all dove in learning to play their respective instruments so it was authentic and didn’t look like anyone was faking it during the musical pieces. The costume designer made sure to cover every star formation that Queen went through throughout the year from hairdos to clothing.

Production design had their work cut out for them recreating the many stages that Queen performed it throughout the world and through time. Reproducing Freddie’s home and the recording studio where they recorded Bohemian Rhapsody.

Recreating Live Aid
You can’t talk about Queen without talking about their historic performance at Live Aid which was why it was a huge undertaking to recreate for film. Being the first thing filmed, the actors portraying Queen had to forge a friendship quickly in order to be able to show the United front that Queen was after years of playing together.
