Korean septet, BTS, composed of Jin, Namjoon (RM), Yoongi (SUGA), Hoseook (J-Hope), Jimin, Taehyung (V) and Jungkook, have made another important step in their artistic history as well as representing their homeland in a big way.

Not only are they the first Korean artists to be nominated for a Grammy but also the first to take the stage as presenters. The group took the stage for the best R&B album category, awarding the Grammy to H.E.R. for her self-titled album.

“Growing up in South Korea, we always dreamed of being on the Grammys stage,” said Namjoon. “Thank you to all our fans for making this dream come true and we’ll be back.”

International success has not come overnight but in the past year BTS has checked off milestones that other kpop groups have yet to achieve. Their most recent, “Love Yourself: Tear” and”Love Yourself: Answer,” became the first K-Pop albums to reach number one on the Billboard 200 albums chart and the former was also nominated for best recording package (i.e. artwork) at this year’s Grammys, alongside the Seoul-based branding outfit HuskyFox.

BTS also made history becoming the first Korean pop group to perform at the 2017 American Music Awards in November of last year and as well as the first Korean artists to perform at New York’s Citi Field Stadium during their “Love Yourself” world tour last year.

The group also used their platform at tonight’s award ceremony to shine a light on designers from their homeland. Although they’ve worked with Gucci, Saint Laurent and Dior in the past, the band chose not one but two Korean designers for their outfits.

South Korean designers. JayBaek Couture delivered custom looks for V, Jungkook, Jin, Jimin, Suga, and RM, while J-Hope’s came from designer Kim Seo Ryong, whose namesake label has long been a fixture at Seoul Fashion Week. Acts like these are why these young men continue to be a source of pride for South Korea and their fans.
