British singer-songwriter Natalie Shay is bringing her unique brand of indie pop to the music masses with her beyond her years storytelling abilities and bold genre bending music experimentations. The multi faceted artist recently released her latest single, “Perfume” with accompanying music video. We had the grand opportunity to have a quick chat about her intriguing artistic journey, her beginnings, her songwriting and more.

SR: What is your story?
NS: I’m a 19 year old singer/songwriter and guitarist from north london. I trained in classical guitar from the age of 5 and have always had a great interest in music. as a huge taylor swift fan around the age of 11 i started trying to write my own songs, aged 13 i started gigging and entering music competitions. Having graduated from the BRIT school last year after 4 years studying music there, I’m now doing music full time and It’s great fun.

SR: How would you describe your music
NS: Indie/ pop/ rock

SR: Does being a female artist motivate you to speak on everyday emotions females deal with in your songwriting?
NS: Yeah, I suppose the overall sound of a lot of my music is quite heavy, i like to think that by keeping the lyrics honest and true to myself as a woman, creates my own special twist on the genre of music.

SR: What artists have been your biggest influence or inspiration?
NS: The vaccines, Taylor Swift, little comets

SR: What inspired your single,”Perfume”?What was the recording session like?
NS: We wrote perfume around recording it, a majority of the track was produced before i had even written the top line or lyrics. I don’t often write songs this way so it was fun an interesting for me to try. The song is very much inspired by 80s pop music but the lyrics I think are modern and relatable, it was fun to create a track like this.

SR: What do you want your listeners to take with them after listening to your music?
NS: I hope this song makes them feel good and i hope the main hook gets stuck in their heads haha.

SR: What advice would you give to anyone who aspires to be an artist?
NS: To decide what artist you want to be an just go for it, no time to wait around.

SR: What can we expect next from you?
NS: More songs!!!!
