Based on the international best-selling autobiographic books “Papillon” and “Banco”, the film follows the epic story of Henri “Papillon” Charrière (Charlie Hunnam), a safecracker from the Parisian underworld who is framed for murder and condemned to life in the notorious penal colony on Devil’s Island. Determined to regain his freedom, Papillon forms an unlikely alliance with a convicted counterfeiter Louis Dega (Rami Malek), who in exchange for protection, agrees to finance Papillon’s escape.

The remake of 1973 classic with the role made famous by Steve McQueen in the lead role, has Hunnam playing Charrière or Papillon/”Papi” (French for “butterfly”) as he’s affectionately known by the other inmates, while Malek takes on the role of fellow convict Louis Dega. Together they dream of escaping of their brutal imprisonment, enduring solitary confinement, violence, and appalling conditions along the way.

Directed by Michael Noer and written by Aaron Guzikoswski, Papillon also stars Yorick Van Wageningen, Roland Moller, Tommy Flanagan and Eve Hewson and opens in theaters August 24.
