New York based pop singer, Sophie Beem is bound to inspire her generation with her touching songwriting talent and catchy soundscapes. I recently had the opportunity to chat with the talented songstress where we discussed her music influences, how singer Beyoncé discovered her music, to traveling to Zambia and how it changed her outlook on life and inspired her latest single, “Glow”.

SR: Who is Sophie Beem? What is your story?
SB: Well, I grew up on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, NYC. I loved to sing at an early age and as I grew up, I took on songwriting and playing instruments. I also would perform at local venues downtown to get out there. I auditioned for XFactor Season 2 when I was 13 and made it to 40 out of 250,000 people. It was awesome. From there, Beyonce discovered my music…it happened so quickly, the general manager of her company at the time was at the Bitter End watching me perform and she then asked me to put together a package of my music for Beyonce and a personal letter on my dreams and aspirations. After that, I dove into the songwriting process and fell in love with what it means to be an artist.

SR: How would you describe your music style?
SB: Rhythmic pop

SR: What artists have been your biggest influence or inspiration?
SB: I love Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, and Beyonce. I aspire to be as successful as them one day. I want to make amazing music and share it with the world. I also love to dance while I sing and these ladies can do that.

SR: What is the most challenging part of being an artist?
SB: Probably how lonely it is. It is hard to make real friends in the music industry because it is so competitive. It would be nice if women could support more women.

SR: In these dark times all over the world, do the current events influence you to write positive music? If so, in what ways?
SB: Yes, for me I always love writing inspirational undertones in my songs. Sia is a big influence of mine writing wise, she has the simplest messages that mean the world to people. I love creating songs that are meaningful as well as catchy and fun to dance to.

SR: What inspired your single, “Glow”? What was the recording session like?
SB: The Fault in our Stars. There is a quote at the beginning of the movie that says “You are already who you are meant to be.” That struck a chord with me because I always wanted to change things about myself when really you are who you are and you should just be yourself. It was so fun recording “Glow”. I worked with two talented people and they brought amazing ideas and together we brought the song to life. RedOne, an amazing producer I have been working with, put his own flavor on the production and I love how it turned out. “Glow” is such a special song to me.

SR: How was the experience of traveling to Zambia like? Did it change your outlook on life in any way?
SB: Yes, it definitely made me realize how kids in the United States take education for granted and I was one of them. When I went to Zambia all the kids are yearning to learn and have enough funds to be able to go to school and get the materials. It is so heartbreaking to see children at a disadvantage because of the country they live in. It makes me want to do so much for them and help them in any way that I can. I think singing to them made them really happy and inspired them to keep working hard. Overall, it made me value education so much more. It is a privilege to learn and grow and I now value that so much more.

SR: What do you want your listeners to take with them after listening to your music?
SB: I want them to feel things that they haven’t felt before and realize that they aren’t alone and it is okay to feel things. Everyone goes through highs and lows and sometimes you just want to turn up a great song and dance. I want to be able to do that for my fans.

SR: What can we expect next for you?
SB: I have been creating my next body of work with Grammy nominated producer, RedOne. We have an amazing new sound that I cannot wait for everyone to hear. So new music! Get ready!
