Welcome to the newest edition of our Artist Spotlight feature! On this edition, we bring you an intriguing psych-soul indie band hailing from Brooklyn, New York who have released their fantastic new single, “Sycamore” from their upcoming debut LP due out later this year. We had the amazing opportunity to have a chat with Space Captain’s Maralisa Simmons-Cook who gave us some intriguing insight of what Space Captain is really about.

Q: Who is Space Captain? How would you describe your music?
Space Captain is a seven-piece psych-soul group based in Brooklyn. Our music began in 2013 when we met at The New School and formed a sort of a straight ahead R&B group, but since then we have progressed toward a fusion of soul, indie rock, and jazz.

Q: Who are your musical influences?
Lyrically and melodically, Amy Winehouse, Bonnie Raitt and Nina Simone among others. As a group, our sound draws on the greats (D’Angelo, Jeff Buckley, etc) as well as upcoming local NY talent (Nick Hakim, Margaret Glaspy, Mitski, Gabriel Garzón-Montano).

Q: What do you want your listeners to take with them after listening to your music?
All of our music is super personal, and usually surrounds themes of familial issues, love, nostalgia, heartbreak, and so on. It’s all written from my perspective for the most part, but as I’ve continued to perform and show our music to different listeners, some of them have found ways to connect with it deeply even if the story doesn’t directly relate to them. I want people to feel centered and in touch with themselves when they listen to our music, whether that means feeling calm or infuriated or whatever. Just being open and honest with themselves and what they’re feeling and what’s going on in their own lives. Kind of like yoga! A lot of our music isn’t super upbeat, but there’s a lot of emotion and power there.

Q: What projects are you currently working on?
Our debut LP is due out late this October! Keep an eye out for the album announcement very soon!
